   I note the recent revision to the official quantum of islands in the Republic.

   I respectfully seek your advice on what specifIcatIon, definitions or standards that the NAMRIA apply to natural marine formations to determine whether they are officially categorised as an “island” per se.

   I ask this because, as I understand it, a natural marine structure which rises to the internationally-recognised objective status as “island” attracts a specific significance of status in international law, a status which does not attach to lesser nature marine structures.

   This categorical [or taxonomic] aspect of international mapping practice can take on special significance if any national government were to take military control of a natural marine structure. Diplomatic and arbitrative argumentation regarding the legtimacy of governmental authority over such natural structures can be impacted by either the accuracy or the faulty categorisation of them as either an “island” according to an objective international standard, or a lesser, ‘non-island’ structure.

   Any guidance that the NAMRIA can offer me would be deeply appreciated.
